In Morocco, eating well and eating with a view are rarely mutually exclusive. The tradition of rooftop terraces — built for catching breezes over the medina — has evolved into one of the country’s finest dining experiences. These are the restaurants where the view is as good as what’s on the plate.
Marrakech: Nomad Restaurant
Nomad, in the heart of the Marrakech spice market, has a stunning rooftop with views over the medina’s rooftops and minarets. The menu is contemporary Moroccan — traditional flavours reworked with precision. The lamb shank with preserved lemon and the seafood pastilla are standouts. Book the top floor at sunset.
Fès: Café Clock Rooftop
Perched above the Chouara tanneries neighbourhood, Café Clock offers arguably the best rooftop view in Morocco — the ancient medina of Fès stretching to the hills, a minaret in every direction. The camel burger is famous; the Moroccan breakfast is excellent. Live music on certain evenings.
Essaouira: Taros Café
Taros on Place Moulay Hassan is Essaouira’s most atmospheric terrace — two floors above the main square, with views of the ramparts and the Atlantic beyond. Excellent cocktails (one of the few places in Morocco that serves them well), live Gnawa music on Friday evenings, and a menu that mixes Moroccan and Mediterranean cooking.
Chefchaouen: Bab Ssour Terrace
For sheer visual drama, the terrace overlooking the blue medina of Chefchaouen at dusk is unbeatable. Several small cafés along the upper medina walls offer mint tea and msemen with the entire blue city spread below you. No reservations needed — just arrive before sunset.
