A man has drowned after his kayak capsized in floodwaters as Australia’s east coast is smashed with severe rainfall.
Emergency services rushed to the scene in Abbotsford, on the Parramatta River in Sydney just after 2.45pm on Sunday where they found man struggling to stay afloat.
A member of the public tried desperately to rescue the man but he succumbed to the rising water.
‘Police are conducting inquiries to identify the man and will prepare a report for the Coroner,’ NSW Police, said.
It comes as millions of residents have been told to stay home and put their travel plans on hold as ‘life-threatening’ storms batter NSW.
More than 500,000 people were urged to evacuate flood-prone areas before they became trapped by rapidly rising floodwater.
