A highly decorated former policeman and dolphin trainer is one of the breakout stars of the federal election – having defeated one of Scott Morrison’s closest allies at the election on Saturday.
Labor candidate Sam Lim has flipped the Perth seat of Tangney for the first time in almost four decades, ousting two-term sitting Liberal MP Ben Morton, a mate of the former Prime Minister’s, in the process.
Born and raised in Malaysia, Mr Lim, 61, grew up as the eldest of eight children in a ‘very poor family’ which had no power or water.
His first career was as a constable in the Royal Malaysian Police Force but walked away after two years in the job because the low pay wasn’t enough to survive on. His next career was life-changing.
