Lavonne Phillips, of Bartow, hiking through the Circle B Bar Reserve in Florida when she heard an eight-foot alligator climbing over a fence
She said she didn’t even notice the gator until she heard a ‘heavy chomping sound’ and had even walked past it
‘I didn’t actually spot the big gator, that’s the scary part. I had my back turned to the opposite side of the bridge,’ she said
The alligator managed to climb the fence in 20 seconds and landed face-first into the murky swamp
It was later found hiding under a bridge and hissing, but did not attack humans
