HPV jab which uses same technology as AstraZeneca Covid vaccine could combat cervical cancer in adults
- Trial is under way at several NHS hospitals giving more than 50 women who test positive for pre-cancerous tissue on their cervix a specially designed HPV jab
- Researchers will examine whether pre-cancerous tissue is still on the cervix, along with any traces of HPV (human papillomavirus), an infection almost always present when women develop this cancer
- The trial, called Apollo, involves a vaccine called VTP-200, which targets HPV
- It is different from HPV jab given to teenagers as it uses an inactivated chimpanzee adenovirus – same technology as in AstraZeneca Covid jab
