Chelsea’s billionaire owner Roman Abramovich and telecoms tycoon Alisher Usmanov could be the next wealthy Russian oligarchs with suspected links to Putin to be targeted with sanctions after the invasion of Ukraine.
In the Commons yesterday the Prime Minister announced immediate sanctions were being deployed against ‘very high net wealth individuals’, who he described as ‘cronies’ of the Russian president.
But there was some disquiet that only Gennady Timchenko, Boris Rotenberg and Igor Rotenberg were on the list, with MPs demanding sanctions be widened so ministers can target Abramovich and dozens of others.
