Homeless sleep on subway on first day of Adams’s subway safety plan

New York Mayor Eric Adams’s initiative to tackle crime and homelessness on the subway got off to a rocky start as straphangers were targeted in a half-dozen attacks, including one involving a hatchet and another in which a woman was bashed in the head with a metal pipe, over the Presidents Day weekend.

Homeless people were also pictured on Monday by lying across the seats and floors of the cars on the first day of the safety plan. 

The six attacks occurred just hours after Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, both Democrats, announced a crackdown on rampant crime and homelessness in the sprawling transit system on Friday, leaving six people stabbed or slashed in subway stations or trains, according to the New York Police Department.
