Australia weather: Storms in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane – and the weekend forecast

Huge areas of eastern Australia are set to be pelted by torrential rain for the rest of the week after a deluge caused flash flooding across Sydney on Tuesday.

From Wednesday through the weekend – and likely the start of the next week – the entire east coast and as far inland as the South Australian border will be drenched with strong winds, hail and lightning also likely. 

The wet weather is being caused by a high pressure ridge pulling moisture-laden air over Queensland and NSW where it will hit an upper-level trough and be converted into rain.

The brunt of the downpour later in the week will be on the NSW and Queensland border and in Cape York but will stretch as far south as Melbourne.
