- One of the worst misses of the new season happened in Argentina on Tuesday
- Argentinos Juniors ace Nicolas Reniero blazed over the crossbar just yards out
- Reniero seized on the ball but fired off target despite the goal being at his mercy
- Luckily, his blushes were spared with Argentinos beating Newell’s Old Boys 1-0
Football failed to live up to its ‘Beautiful Game’ moniker in the early hours of Tuesday morning after a horrific open goal miss in Argentina.
Nicolas Reniero was incredibly left red-faced and in disbelief following his glaring error while playing for Argentinos Juniors against Newell’s Old Boys.
Luckily for him, his team managed to hold out to take a 1-0 victory, but footage of his comical strike has quickly taken social media by storm.
Argentinos Juniors’ Nicolas Reniero was guilty of a nightmare miss against Newell’s Old Boys
A horrendous string of mistakes from Newell’s Old Boys handed the hosts the perfect opening to double their lead in the first minute of second half stoppage time.
The breakdown in communication between Alan Aguerre and his defender saw Reniero latch on to a loose ball and then skip around the goalkeeper.
But just a matter of inches out, and with the net truly at his mercy, the misfiring forward somehow planted his effort over the crossbar.
Reniero seized on a loose pass and raced towards goal with the net at his mercy in added time
Reniero was understandably dumbfounded after blazing off target, and placed his hands in his head while his opponents breathed a sigh of relief ahead of a goal-kick.
His poor shot saw his evening take a lurch for the worse, with the 26-year-old having already failed to score twice before in a display of woeful finishing.
A host of experts and pundits weighed in with their opinions at full-time, and their assessments were scathing.
ESPN Argentina labelled the moment as the ‘wrong goal of the year’, while Juan Pablo Varsky said Reniero ‘unlocked the hidden level of #YouCannotBeSerious.’
But somehow, Reniero fired over the crossbar, although the home team held out for the victory
TNT Sports, meanwhile, assured their viewers that the miss was ‘incredible but real’, and commentator Fabian Godoy said that the forward ‘will not be able to sleep’.
Lucas Villalba scored the winner on 87 minutes, just moments before team-mate Reniero’s mistake, to hand Argentinos their first win of the new domestic season.
Jonatan Cristaldo was sent off just seconds into the second half, capping off a poor evening for Newell’s Old Boys.
