Vaccinated Australians can now access a digital certificate to prove they’ve had coronavirus jab

Every vaccinated Australian can now access a digital certificate to prove they had the jab – here is how to get your hands on one

  • Fully vaccinated Australians will receive digital certificate proving jab status
  • Covid-19 digital certificate is proof of vaccination accessible anytime, anywhere
  • Available on myGov or Express Plus Medicare app when second jab is recorded
  • Security features of certificate make them impossible to be illegally reproduced

Australians who receive a coronavirus vaccine will be given access to a digital certificate as proof they’ve been jabbed.

The certificates will be given after recipients have had their second jab.

Those who have already had both injections have been issued a certificate through their Medicare account, which can now be accessed online and downloaded to their mobile for easy access, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Security features of the certificate are similar to the technology used for digital drivers licenses and IDs, preventing people mocking up fake certificates.

Fully vaccinated Australians will be able to immediately access their digital certificate through the myGov or Express Plus Medicare app as soon as their second jab is reported to officials.

‘The Covid-19 digital certificate makes proof of vaccination accessible anytime, anywhere,’ government minister Linda Reynolds said.

‘We’re also giving people control over the level of vaccination history they share, as the certificate only shows your Covid-19 vaccination status.’

Ms Reynolds urged Australians to link their Medicare details to their myGov for simple and easy access.

Less tech-savvy vaccinated Australians unable to access the digital certificate would be able to get a hard copy version from any Services Australia office.

When and how the certificates are used will be up to each state and territory, and there had been widespread predictions such a digital certificate or ‘vaccine passport’ would be needed for activities such as airline travel.

However such proposals have met opposition overseas, with the UK government’s plans for such vaccine passports being watered down after coming under attack on civil rights grounds.

‘We oppose the divisive and discriminatory use of Covid status certification to deny individuals access to general services, businesses or jobs,’ said a statement signed by a group of more than 70 UK lawmakers.

Australia notched its fifth millionth jab three months after the country’s biggest vaccination program launched as a record 88,000 Australians rolled up their sleeves for the vaccine on Saturday.

Around 772,750 vaccinations have been completed in the last six days, which is also a record.
