Armed police storm Welsh farm and find man shot dead inside burning barn

A wealthy property developer found shot dead by armed police inside the burning wreck of a luxury barn conversion on a Welsh farm has been pictured for the first time.

The body of a 53-year-old man, named locally as Roger Selway, was discovered by officers at the home in the former mining village of Ynysybwl, near Pontypridd yesterday morning.

Dozens of armed officers stormed the isolated beauty spot after neighbours heard a shot fired – and then saw smoke coming from the country home.

Officers are investigating the shooting tragedy but confirmed today that they are not treating the tragic death as suspicious and are not looking for anybody else.

Neighbours told of their shock after hearing of the man’s death in the quiet village.

Glynis Harries, 73, said: ‘It is so shocking. It’s usually very quiet here but there were all these police around.

‘I heard there had been a shooting up the road and I couldn’t believe it. There were all sorts of rumours going around.

‘I didn’t hear a shot or anything.’

Rebecca Davies, 21, said: ‘I know there were armed officers up there. 18 of them and the fire service.’

‘The fire was huge. The bedroom was completely gone.’

Ben Cummings, landlord of The Old Ynysybwl Inn, said he knew Mr Selway as a neighbour but that he didn’t visit the pub.

Mr Cummings said he saw a fleet of police cars heading towards Mr Selway’s barn on Tuesday morning.

‘There were nine armed response cars going up there,’ he said.

‘It is terrible shock for people living around here – it is not a big city with lots of crime. He kept himself to himself.’

A neighbour said: ‘I can’t believe it. Roger was a nice guy. He would always say hello and that when I was walking the dogs.

‘I don’t know exactly what has happened, there are so many rumours going around but it’s really sad.’
