Manchester City chiefs admit they ‘lost sight of the historic values of the club’ as they email EVERY supporter individually with grovelling apology for joining up to disastrous European Super League plot

  • Manchester City have become the latest side to apologise to their supporters
  • Each fan registered with the club received a personal email on Wednesday night
  • City were part of the failed European Super League plot concocted by 12 clubs

Manchester City have sent an unreserved apology directly to each registered supporter for their role in the infamous European Super League.

The letter, emailed to members individually rather than published on the official website, admitted that they had lost sight of the club’s values.

Signed by chief executive Ferran Soriano, City detailed that they ‘deeply regret’ the decision to join up with five other Premier League clubs and talked of regaining trust with their fanbase.

‘As you know, Manchester City has formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League,’ the letter read.

‘As always, when we make choices and decisions, we do so with the best interests of the club in mind and we believed that being part of such an initiative could give us a voice that might be imperative to our future ability to succeed and grow.

‘However, in making that choice we failed to remind ourselves of the unbreakable link between the passion of our fans and the right to have the opportunity to earn success.

‘It is a truth that is fundamental to the DNA of Manchester City and the board deeply regrets taking a decision that lost sight of the historic values of the club. We made a mistake and we sincerely apologise to our fans for the disappointment, frustration and anguish caused by the last 72 hours.

‘The owners, chairman, board and staff are completely committed to ensuring that the club continues to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing well-being of both the English and European football pyramids and their associated competitions.

‘We will embrace the opportunity to earn back the full trust of our stakeholders and the football family in general.’

City spent this morning speaking to various stakeholders and staff to organise the logistics of a unified response before communicating the apology.

City had received in the region of 250 complaints from fans via email and letters since they were announced as one of 12 breakaway clubs on Sunday night. The club are set for an already scheduled meeting with fan representatives next week.

Kevin Parker, the general secretary of City’s official supporters’ club, praised Soriano’s sentiments.

‘I sent Ferran an email on Monday and reminded him that City must know it’s not good for City or football,’ Parker said.

‘I thought the personnel that we had on the playing side cannot be comfortable with. They’ve been selected for not only their great footballing ability, but their humanity and humility. They know football is not about them – it’s about fans and the community.

‘What happened was not the club we’ve known since 2008. There was something wrong. It didn’t fit the ethos of the club we currently are. I asked for them to do the right thing and football will remember us for doing that.’
