Everton’s Jean-Philippe Gbamin ‘suffers freak training injury and will not play again THIS SEASON’

Everton’s £25m midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin ‘suffers freak injury in training and may not play again THIS SEASON’ just days after ending 19-month injury nightmare with sub appearance against Crystal Palace

  • Everton midfielder Jean-Phillipe Gbamin has suffered another injury set-back
  • The 25-year-old has had a ‘freak injury’ during training days after his return
  • Gbamin has been out of action for 19 months after two long-term spells out

Everton fear midfielder Jean Philippe Gbamin could be out for the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in training.

The 25-year-old has only just returned after 19 months out with Achilles and quadricep injuries and made a 12-minute cameo appearance in last Monday’s 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park.

Gbamin, who cost Everton £25million from Mainz in 2019, suffered the contact injury in training at the weekend and was ruled out of Monday night’s clash with Brighton.

He will undergo a scan in London on Tuesday amid concerns his season is now over.

The news is a major blow for Gbamin who had talked of his relief at returning to action after such a long absence.

Gbamin will join Abdoulaye Doucoure, out with a broken foot, and Andre Gomes, hamstring, on the injury list while teenage midfield prospect Tyler Onyango is also facing between three to four months out with a fractured ankle.

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti will not be pleased with Gbamin’s poor luck as he is already light in midfield and hoped his Palace return would begin a new chapter in his career in Merseyside.

Influential summer signings Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan have both been out of action in recent weeks, with the Brazilian international returning to training this week.

Since arriving from Mainz in 2019, Gbamin made just two appearances under former boss Marco Silva before being ruled out with a quadriceps injury.

The problem worsened for him as he needed two seperate rounds of surgery and after a long road to recovery, he picked up a seperate injury that has left him out for the last 11 months.
