A meth-addicted teenager who stabbed a 16-year-old girl in the face with a box cutter at a shopping centre has been sentenced to four years in jail.

Jai Dylan Clarke appeared in Maroochydore District Court on Monday charged with grevious bodily harm, assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and possession of a weapon in a public place.

He was sentenced to four years jail time with a non parole period of 14 months after pleading guilty to stabbing the young girl outside of Kawana Shoppingworld in Buddina on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on June 20.

Clarke told the court his biggest fear was being assaulted behind bars, and revealed he’d been in protection for the 243 days he’d already spent behind bars.

The teenage girl was attempting to break up a fight between 18-year-old Clarke and her own 17-year-old boyfriend.

The court heard Clarke and his teenage victim had argued online and there was ‘plenty of animosity’ between the pair.

But they did not arrange to meet at the centre, instead bumping into each other while they were separately shopping.

Clarke was carrying a box cutter, and approached the couple when he saw them in passing, threatening the male with the weapon.

The court heart the 17-year-old boy told Clarke if he ‘wanted to start something’ they should ‘go outside’.

CCTV footage tendered to the court shows Clarke then lunged at the boy, before his 16-year-old girlfriend jumped in between to break the fight up.

She was sliced from her chin all the way down to her ear and suffered a 10cm-long, 1cm-deep laceration which required stitches.

The prosecution argued on Monday Clarke was ‘lucky it did not extend to her underlying neck muscle’ but that she has suffered lifelong disfigurement despite essentially being ‘an innocent bystander’.

‘The disfigurement is serious,’ the prosecutor said. ‘It may fade somewhat, but it is likely to be with her for the remainder of her life.’

The 17-year-old man escaped serious injury, potentially due to the fact that he was wearing several layers of clothing.

The teenager cried as his case was first heard in court.

He told the court he is extremely remorseful for his actions and is now focused on kicking his drug habit and gaining meaningful employment.

He swore to ‘never return to his criminality’ and described the incident as a ‘drug fuelled over reaction’.

Clarke will be eligible for parole on August 22, six months from his sentencing date and 14 months after he was initially arrested.
